A Message From Shanon Kawata
Dear Friends,
Hunger has been a persisting issue around the world. And our Washtenaw County is no exception. In fact, a recent study by the Food Security Council shows that there is a correlation between high healthcare costs and food insecurity, and Washtenaw County is one of the 16 counties with the highest healthcare costs out of all 83 counties in Michigan(1). This means that our county has higher rates of food insecurity.
In Michigan, the food price has gone up by 15% due to the pandemic and the War in Ukraine.(2) This has put more people under pressure or even jeopardized them. The Food Security Council also analyzed in a diagram (https://www.michigan.gov/-/media/Project/Websites/mdhhs/Folder2/FSC_Final_Report1.pdf?rev=a649563170a9477892c247f254e4dac2 Pg 12) how Covid-19, poverty, health, and food insecurity are linked to each other.(3)
According to Feeding America, one in nine people in Michigan face hunger. And painfully enough, one in seven CHILDREN face hunger(4). I am among six children who eat every day. And so are your children, or your grandchildren. But where is that one child starving in pain every day? That child may not live next-door but somewhere in Michigan – one out of every seven children.
In this holiday season, Community High teamed up with Food Gatherers for our annual fundraiser. Every dollar provides three meals for people in need. If you donate before November 22, 2022, your donation will be DOUBLED by our generous partners. Every dollar from you will be providing six meals! Last year, my forum raised $5,500. Please help us raise more this year.
To donate, you can:
1. Use this link (foodgatherers.org/chs) and follow the instructions. Please be sure to select my name (Shanon Kawata) or forum (Maneesha Mankad) after you click “donate” so my forum gets credit for the donation.
2. Give money or a check (payable to Food Gatherers) to me and I will turn it in, or mail the check directly to Food Gatherers (PO Box 131037, Ann Arbor, MI 48113) – please remember to write “Community High” in the memo line.
Lastly, Food Gatherers was founded by Zingerman’s on Thanksgiving Day in 1988. And one in seven children STILL fight hunger. I hope we can share what we have and fight together as a CommUNITY before they surrender.
Thank you,
Shanon Kawata

In Support of Food Gatherers
Our Mission: Food Gatherers exists to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes in our community.
We rescue local food and leverage state and national food resources for hunger relief. We lead a network of hunger relief providers and engage the public in the fight against hunger. We create and sustain innovative new food programs in response to emerging needs. We recognize that hunger will not be solved through the provision of food alone, so we advocate for policies and system changes to create an equitable food system.
