42 million Americans - including 1.4 million Michiganders - did not receive essential SNAP benefits on November 1. Without this vital assistance, the country is on track to experience “the greatest hunger catastrophe in America since the Great Depression.” Without these benefits, millions will have no choice but to turn to food banks for assistance. Our food banks, already under enormous strain and unable to meet the growing need in their communities, are facing an unprecedented demand.
Even if the government shut down were to end today - there is an expected delay in receiving the November SNAP benefits, and people cannot wait.
We are a small community but we can make a big impact:
- Because Food Gatherers can purchase food at a significant discount, it is often more cost-effective to donate funds instead of food. For every dollar you spend to purchase food at the store, we can buy two to three times more from national wholesalers.
- Food Gatherers distributes food through more than 140 partners and programs in Washtenaw County.
- 95% of donations go directly to hunger-relief activities in our community.
In Support of Food Gatherers
Our Mission: Food Gatherers exists to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes in our community.
We rescue local food and leverage state and national food resources for hunger relief. We lead a network of hunger relief providers and engage the public in the fight against hunger. We create and sustain innovative new food programs in response to emerging needs. We recognize that hunger will not be solved through the provision of food alone, so we advocate for policies and system changes to create an equitable food system.
