Michigan Medicine’s longstanding partnership with Food Gatherers has made a real difference by providing healthy food to our community through our Million Meals Mission.In 2020, the food insecurity challenge in Washtenaw County became even more profound as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Social isolation, job and wage losses, and competing costs related to housing, transportation, health care and food placed significant pressure on individuals and families throughout our community.Michigan Medicine knew we needed to take meaningful, tangible action. From fall 2020 through 2022, we held five food drives and engaged our faculty, staff and students in directly supporting our community. Our team rolled up its sleeves to make those efforts possible. We organized teams, secured docks for food collection, and coordinated food pickups and distributions with Food Gatherers. The response from our Michigan Medicine community was remarkable. Over those two years, the generosity of our team members helped provide the equivalent of 313,000 meals to people experiencing food insecurity.That momentum led to the creation of the Million Meals Mission in fall 2022. We wanted to build on the incredible generosity of our community and create an organization-wide campaign that would make it easy for our faculty, staff and students to step up and make a difference.In 2026 we reached an important milestone: Michigan Medicine exceeded its goal of raising one million meals for our community, in collaboration with Food Gatherers.But we’re not stopping at one million meals. Given the continued need in our community and the incredible response from our Michigan Medicine community, we’re extending the campaign with a new goal of providing two million meals for those in need across Washtenaw County. In Support of Food Gatherers
Our Mission: Food Gatherers exists to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes in our community.
We rescue local food and leverage state and national food resources for hunger relief. We lead a network of hunger relief providers and engage the public in the fight against hunger. We create and sustain innovative new food programs in response to emerging needs. We recognize that hunger will not be solved through the provision of food alone, so we advocate for policies and system changes to create an equitable food system.
