Did you know about 15% of Washtenaw County residents struggle to meet their food needs?
Through the University of Michigan course OS305: Inside Organizations, we have learned about the importance of organizations driven by a mission which contributes to society as a whole. In order to give back to our community, we have decided to fundraise for Food Gatherers, a local non-profit in hopes that we will raise awareness and assist the organization in its efforts to aid the citizens of Washtenaw County.
Food Gatherers, a member of the nation’s food bank network Feeding America, is an Ann-Arbor based non-profit dedicated to alleviating hunger and eliminating its causes in the community. Started in 1988 as Michigan’s first food rescue program, Food Gatherers was founded by Zingerman’s Delicatessen, an Ann Arbor for-profit local business. In 2017, Food Gatherers distributed 6.5 million pounds of food to residents of Washtenaw County, which is the equivalent of 5.4 million meals. Through donations and rescues of food that would otherwise go to waste from 300 local sources, Food Gatherers provides mostly free (70%) and low-cost food, as well as capacity building grants, training to register individuals for government benefit programs, and food safety training. Join us in the fight against hunger!
A donation of any amount can make a huge difference! Please help us reach our goal.
